Introduction

  The School of Physics, Northeast Normal University offers three undergraduate programs, namely, physics, electronic information science and technology and materials physics. The program in physics, as a national characteristic specialty, was identified as a national first-class undergraduate program in 2019 and has passed the second-level certification test for normal schools by the Ministry of Education.The program in materials physics was identified as a national first-class undergraduate program in 2021 and the program in electronic information science and technology was included in Jilin Provincial “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan” for Colleges and Universities.

  The school owns two doctorate programs in first-level discipline (physics and materials science and engineering), the center for post-doctoral studies in physics, one master’s degree program in first-level discipline (control science and engineering, seven master’s degree program in second-level discipline (theoretical physics, particle physics and nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, optics, applied physics, materials physics and chemistry, and curriculum and pedagogy), and two master’s professional degree programs in subject teaching (physics) and electronic information. It has won B+ in the fourth-round national discipline ranking in physics and ranked among the national “double first-class” initiative in materials science and engineering in 2017 and 2022.The school boasts a top-level teaching faculty consisting of 125 members, among whom there are 39 professors and 40 associate professors. Of them, there is 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 national talents, more than 20 provincial and ministerial talents, 1 national model teacher, chairman of the 4th National Expert Committee on Teacher Education Curriculum Resources, members of the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the 7th Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, and 1 member of the Teaching Steering Committee of Physics Specialty of the Teaching Steering Committee of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education.

  The School of Physics has a good platform for teaching, scientific research, academic exchange and social service. It is approved and has built a national experimental teaching demonstration center for physics (normal specialty), the first virtual teaching and research center by the Ministry of Education, and the first innovative experimental areas for talent training models for colleges and universities in Jilin Province. Besides, it has built scientific research institutions such as Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education in Ultraviolet Emission Materials and Technology, Key Laboratory of Jilin Province in Advanced Energy Development and Application Innovation, Science and Technology Innovation Center of Jilin Province in Aerospace Special Coating Materials, Quantum Science Center, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Institute of Radiation Technology, and Institute of Physical Education. It has also established the academic exchange platform of theoretical physics of NSFC, having exchange plans with many well-known universities at home and abroad. Entrusted by the Steering Committee of Physics and Astronomy Teaching in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, it takes the charge of the journal of Physical Experiment. Besides, it owns the Ministry of Education "Demonstration Centralized Training Base for Physics in Middle Schools (National Training Base)".

Achievements

  The school has made remarkable achievements in both teaching and scientific research. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 100 projects including national key research ad development programs, national major scientific research programs, national major scientific instruments and equipment development projects, NSFC major research programs and key projects. Great progress has been made in publication of SCI papers in both quantity and quality. Its faculty has published many national planning textbooks and won one first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, two second prizes of the National Natural Science Award and many first prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels. 

  It is the winner of the first national first-rate undergraduate courses, the first demonstration projects of value education through courses in colleges and universities by the Ministry of Education, the projects of "golden courses" in colleges and universities in Jilin Province, and the excellent online courses of undergraduate colleges and universities in Jilin Province. Lu Jiaxi training base for top students in mathematics and physics ranks among the national training plan 2.0 base for top students in basic disciplines. One student was awarded China’s most beautiful college students of 2021.
