      Researchers from the Kunming Institute of Precious Metals have published a dissertation titled " The influence of carrier morphology and metal additives on Pd/Ga2O3 catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol”in Precious Metals.

Abstract

      Gallium nitrate (Ga(NO3)3·9H2O) was used as the raw material to prepare gallium oxide (Ga2O3)carriers by the sol-gel method. The morphology of the carriers was designed directionally by adjusting thepH values of the reaction solution. SEM characterization indicated that short rod-shaped Ga2O3 was obtainedwhen pH of the reaction solution was 8, whlie spindle-shaped Ga2O3 was produced at a pH value of 10. Pdwas then loaded on the two different morphological carriers by using an impregnation method. HRTEMcharacterization revealed that Pd and Ga alloyed after loading, forming a stable alloy structure. The catalyticperformance of the catalysts was tested in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction. The results showed that the shortrod-shaped Ga2O3 carrier was more favorable than spindle-shaped Ga2O3 for the CO2 hydrogenation tomethanol. Under the reaction conditions of 2 MPa, 250 °C and a space velocity of 24 L·gcat-1·h-1, the methanol space-time yield was 172.06 mg·g-1·h-1 and the CO2 conversion rate was 4.62% with 45.25% of the selectivity for methanol. Pt, In and Ni were, respectively, introduced into Pd/Ga2O3 catalyst to explore the effect of the second metal on the catalytic performance. As a result, the addition of Pt, In and Ni was unfavorable for the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, but facilitated the reduction of the by-products. And the reaction products were found only to be CO and CH3OH. The present studies will provide an important reference for the subsequent optimization design of such a catalyst.
