On January 11, 2026, a delegation of professors from the School of Semiconductor Science (School of Excellence in Engineering) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) visited Shenzhen Pinghu Laboratory for an in-depth academic seminar and exchange. This visit marked the first expert meeting of 2026 following the delegation’s collaborative project, “Customized Training of Outstanding Engineering Talent for National Strategic Needs—SUSTech’s Industry-Education Integration Practice and Exploration”, which won the 2025 Guangdong Higher Education Outstanding Teaching Achievement Award (Postgraduate Category, First Prize).

Focusing on the Frontiers: Hands-on Tour of R&D
Guided by laboratory experts, the SUSTech delegation toured the R&D, pilot-scale, and analytical testing centers of Shenzhen Pinghu Laboratory. From sophisticated material characterization instruments to efficient and streamlined production lines, the experts highly praised the laboratory’s R&D achievements and engineering capabilities in the semiconductor field. On-site, technical staff from both sides engaged in lively discussions on specific process challenges and technology trends, sparking continuous exchanges of innovative ideas.
Seminar Exchange: Strategizing Collaborative Innovation
During the subsequent seminar, the two parties conducted in-depth discussions around the central theme of “how industry-academia-research integration can support autonomous innovation in the semiconductor industry.” SUSTech experts shared the university’s latest breakthroughs and forward-looking plans in semiconductor materials, device design, and integrated processes. The innovative “School-Laboratory” collaborative model for cultivating high-end engineering talent was highlighted: universities provide cutting-edge fundamental research that underpins industrial breakthroughs, while laboratory-based industry projects develop students’ ability to tackle complex engineering problems. The complementary strengths of SUSTech’s research innovation and the laboratory’s industrial translation capabilities were evident.
Joining Forces to Cultivate Semiconductor Talent
Shenzhen Pinghu Laboratory, established by the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Bureau, focuses on core technology development in SiC, GaN, next-generation advanced power electronic materials and devices, key equipment and components, and supporting materials. It operates as an open, public, and shared research platform serving the entire country.
SUSTech’s School of Semiconductor Science (National School of Excellence in Engineering) concentrates on new materials, next-generation ICT, smart energy, AI, and semiconductors, exploring new paradigms for cultivating and evaluating outstanding engineers and aiming to build a benchmark platform for industry-academia-research integration.
Looking Ahead: Building a New Technology Ecosystem Together
During the visit, both parties tentatively agreed to explore flexible collaborative mechanisms such as joint project teams, using specific R&D projects or technological challenges as opportunities for cooperation. Plans were also made to provide SUSTech students with more internship and research opportunities at Shenzhen Pinghu Laboratory, allowing theoretical classroom knowledge to be honed on the industrial frontlines.
This exchange represents a solid exercise in industry-education integration. In the semiconductor field—a core track supporting modern electronic information society—such “handshakes” and collaborations will continue to inject intellectual momentum into high-quality industrial development, jointly strengthening China’s foundation in global technological competition and enhancing its strategic advantage.
