The School of Microelectronics at Wuhan Textile University has built a strong talent foundation, supported by a high-caliber faculty team led by nationally recognized experts and strengthened by outstanding mid-career scholars. Focusing on the needs of the integrated circuit and semiconductor industry, the school has established five competitive research teams dedicated to cultivating high-level, interdisciplinary, and innovative talents. This article introduces one of them: the Ultra-Wide Bandgap Semiconductor and Optoelectronic Devices Team led by Professor Yunbin He.

The team consists of seven faculty members, including five professors, one associate professor, and one lecturer. Its research covers wide-bandgap semiconductor materials and devices, ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials and devices, ferroelectric semiconductor materials and devices, low-dimensional perovskite materials and advanced optoelectronic devices, as well as VO₂-based smart materials and infrared detectors. The team conducts organized research to explore frontier scientific problems, address critical “bottleneck” technologies, and actively promote technology transfer and industrialization.

The team operates laboratory facilities covering approximately 500 m², including three laboratories for sample preparation and characterization, one Class 10,000 cleanroom, one Class 1,000 cleanroom, as well as offices for faculty and students. The laboratories are equipped with a comprehensive range of instruments for thin-film growth, ceramic processing, device fabrication, and materials characterization. These include a high-vacuum pulsed laser deposition system, a high-vacuum magnetron sputtering system, a halide vapor-phase epitaxy system, a vacuum coating system, a tube furnace, a muffle furnace, a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) system, a photolithography system, an ion etching system, a four-circle single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, a variable-temperature Hall measurement system, a UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer, and an integrated optoelectronic characterization platform.

In recent years, the team has undertaken more than 30 research projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program of China, general and international collaboration projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Ministry of Education Doctoral Fund, major technological innovation projects in Hubei Province, Wuhan municipal frontier research programs, as well as international and industry–university collaboration projects. The team has published over 300 papers in leading domestic and international journals, with more than 8,000 citations. It has filed over 90 patents worldwide, including 3 granted international invention patents and more than 40 granted Chinese invention patents.

Graduate students trained by the team have received awards such as the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award from the Chinese Ceramic Society and the Excellent Master’s Thesis Award of Hubei Province, with multiple recipients of the National Graduate Scholarship. Undergraduate students have won a National Silver Award in the China International “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, as well as provincial Gold and Bronze awards in Hubei.

In addition, the team maintains long-term collaborations with internationally renowned universities and research institutions, including Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany) and the ESI Institute of Materials Science of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Through these collaborations, both sides have carried out joint publications, co-applied for international research projects, exchanged visiting scholars, and conducted joint graduate training, significantly enhancing the team’s international research capability and academic impact.
