The unveiling ceremony of the Crystal Industry (Wuxi) R&D Center of the School of Physical Science and Engineering of Tongji University was held on Dec 26 at Tongji University.
Gu Guodong, member of the Party Working Committee of Wuxi High-tech Zone, deputy director of the Management Committee, Standing Committee member of Xinwu District Party Committee, deputy district Governor and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Taike Park, and Professor Cheng Xinbin, Dean of the School of Physical Science and Engineering of Tongji University attended the event. Professor Zhang Jianwei, Professor Xu Jun, Professor Tang Huili, vice dean of the School of Physical Science and Engineering of Tongji University, the District Science and Technology Bureau, Urban Construction Group, Soft hair Company, Dalian Liancheng CNC Machine Co., LTD., Wuxi Tonglei Crystal Co., Ltd. in charge of the activity.
At the event, Dean Cheng Xinbin introduced the development of the School of Physical Science and Engineering of Tongji University, and Professor Xu Jun introduced the progress of research and development center.
In his speech, Gu Guodong introduced the basic situation of Wuxi High-tech Zone, the development of IC industry and the in-depth cooperation with the university and the university. Nanjing University wins 3 gold MEDALS in China International University Innovation Competition (2023)!
The China International University Innovation Competition is jointly sponsored by 12 departments including the Ministry of Education and Tianjin Municipal People's Government, and hosted by Tianjin University. This year, a total of 4.21 million projects and 17.09 million people from 5,296 schools from 151 countries and regions domestic and international signed up for the competition, and 1,260 outstanding projects stood out and participated in the final stage of the competition in Tianjin University from December 3rd to December 6th. In the national finals of the China International University Innovation Competition (2023), the Nanjing University team won a total of 3 gold awards (including 1 main track, 1 "Youth Red Dream Journey" track, 1 industrial proposition track), 3 silver awards and 4 bronze awards, and the gold awards covered all the courses of the competition.
There were 6 teams from Nanjing University in the final, including 3 main track projects, 1 "Youth Red Dream Journey" track project and 2 industrial proposition track projects. Among them, the project "Enabling China Core - High Energy efficiency Gallium Oxide power electronic Devices" has been highly valued by the Organizing committee and the Ministry of Education, and was selected as one of the 27 exhibition projects of the competition's achievement exhibition, which will be exhibited in the gymnasium of Tianjin University Beiyangyuan Campus from December 3 to December 8, 2023. During the exhibition, the project was visited and commented by Wu Yan, a member of the Party Group and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, Zhou Tianhua, Director of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, and Wu Shixing, deputy director of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education. The leaders highly affirmed the achievements of the project, at the same time, also encouraged the members of the project to carry forward the innovative spirit of contemporary college students, unremitting enterprising, hard work, and continue to shine for the third generation of semiconductor industry in China.

Project Brief introduction: Aiming at the bottleneck of Gallium Oxide ultra-wide band gap power semiconductors, Xianlin Semiconductor team of Nanjing University has developed core technologies such as mass production heteroepitaxy integration, electric field management, avalanche energy dissipation and advanced packaging, overcome the problem of material and device "jam", and proposed and realized the "China solution" of energy-efficient Gallium Oxide power devices. The new generation of power electronic devices for complex electrical environment applications, the comprehensive performance is better than the existing wide band gap semiconductor power devices, has been initially applied to photovoltaic inverter power modules, and effectively promote the technological change and practical process in the field of power electronics.
National Sun Yat-sen University joins hands with Taiwan Applied Crystals to jointly develop Gallium Oxide single crystal bulk
With the rapid development of science and technology, new semiconductor materials are constantly introduced. As a new generation of compound semiconductor materials, Gallium Oxide (Ga₂O₃) shows great application potential in electric vehicles, aerospace, communications and energy. However, its single crystal bulk production technology has become a key bottleneck in the development of the industry.
In order to solve this problem, National Sun Yat-sen University has worked closely with Taiwan Applied Crystal Co., Ltd. and its affiliated groups to develop large-size Gallium Oxide crystal growth technology.
After careful planning, the two sides signed a project cooperation contract, the company will provide 50 million Taiwan dollars of financial support, the goal is to achieve a 6-inch Gallium Oxide single crystal block mass production within 3 years.
Sun Yat-sen University has deep technical accumulation in the field of wide band gap semiconductor materials. The Crystal Research Center led by Professor Mingqi Zhou of the university has taken the lead in the research and development of Gallium Oxide epitaxial thin films domestic and international. And has successfully grown silicon carbide crystal bulk with a diameter of 6 inches. This technological breakthrough laid the foundation for the growth of Gallium Oxide single crystal bulk.
In order to achieve the goal of producing 6 inches of Gallium Oxide single crystal bulk within 3 years, Sun Yat-sen University not only designed the crystal growth equipment, but also incubated the related manufacturing enterprises. At present, four 6-inch silicon carbide long crystal furnaces and one 8-inch silicon carbide long crystal furnaces have been put into use, laying a solid foundation for future research on Gallium Oxide.
The cooperation will further promote the deep integration of academia and industry and inject new vitality into the semiconductor industry in Taiwan, China. With the continuous breakthrough of technology and the growth of market demand, Gallium Oxide single crystal bulk are expected to become an important competitive field in the future semiconductor market.
