On November 4, 2024, the symposium on "Gallium Oxide Materials and Devices" of Journal of Synthetic Crystal and the National Key Research and Development Program project was successfully held on the picturesque Anding Mountain in Fuyang, Hangzhou. As well as from the 46th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, the 55th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, Xidian University, Dalian University of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Hubei Jiufengshan Laboratory, Xiamen University, International Science and ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center, Shandong University, Tiangong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, and other national universities. As the fourth-generation semiconductor materials, Gallium Oxide crystals have attracted much attention for their ultra-wide bandgap and high voltage characteristics. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the research of Gallium Oxide crystals and devices, with crystal sizes repeatedly breaking records, crystal growth methods being innovated, defects and doping studies gradually deepened, and device design and preparation methods continuously optimized, which has become a research hotspot in the field of ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors. It is in this context, the editorial board of Journal of Synthetic Crystal planning organized “Gallium Oxide Materials and Devices” special topic (published in the second issue of 2025), aiming to display the important progress in related fields and the latest achievements both domestic and international, provides beneficial reference for domestic counterparts.
The topic covers four research directions of Gallium Oxide materials and devices: single crystal growth, defect and doping studies, thin film epitaxy, device preparation. It is edited by scholars with outstanding achievements and extensive academic influence in this field, including researcher Hongji Qi, professor Zhitai Jia, professor Hongliang Zhang, professor Xin Dong (Jilin University), professor level senior engineer Hongjuan Cheng (the 46th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation), professor Hong Zhou (Xidian University), researcher Guangwei Xu. The Journal of Synthetic Crystal, relying on the "Synthetic Crystal Materials Youth Academic Conference" sponsored by the Young Editorial Board, has shown a high degree of professionalism and academics, and has played a cohesive role in the field of Synthetic Crystal in China. She summarized the background of the topic with two terms: "At the Right Time" and "In the Right Place". " At the Right Time" refers to the urgent need of the topic for the current technological development of Gallium Oxide and industrial demand; " In the Right Place" means that as the only professional academic journal dedicated to disseminating Synthetic Crystal knowledge and promoting Synthetic Crystal communication in the field, Journal of Synthetic Crystal is the most appropriate journal to organize this topic. Combined with the background, she also systematically introduced the purpose of the journal is to "Prosper Academics and Serve the Industry", as well as Academician Shi-ning Zhu as chief editor of the 7th Editorial Board has been established in promoting academic exchange and the development of the service industry outstanding work in 2019. Researcher Hongji Qi proposed that all representative units can voice on the topic, and everyone can work together to organize a high-level special issue. Professor Zhitai Jia proposed that scientific and technological personnel should publish good research results in the special issue, and truly help domestic technological progress and industry development. Guangwei Xu pointed out that the continuous trial and error of Gallium Oxide devices in turn promote the continuous progress of material technology, and the publication of the topic is undoubtedly the best communication platform for upstream and downstream collaboration and interaction, and expressed active support and promotion of the publication of the topic. Professor Lu Hongliang also suggested that the Gallium Oxide industry should form an upstream and downstream linkage, and some small salon activities can be held on the platform of journals. He pointed out that the establishment of the 7th Editorial Board of the Journal of Synthetic Crystals in 2019 coincided with the important period of rapid development of the field of intraocular crystals to meet the major needs of the country.
