On June 10, 2025, the kick-off meeting and implementation plan review meeting of the key project "Research on Gallium Oxide Monolithic Power Electronic Integrated Devices" under the "Strategic Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation" of the National Key Research and Development Program were held in the East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. This project is led by Associate Professor Lu Xing from the college of Electronic and Information Engineering (college) of Sun Yat-sen University, aiming to break through the key technical bottlenecks of Gallium Oxide semiconductors.
The meeting invited renowned experts such as Academician Liu Jimei from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Long Shibing from the University of Science and Technology of China, Researcher Feng Zhihong from the 13th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, Professor Song Aimin from Southern University of Science and Technology, and Professor Huang Lei from Shenzhen University to form an expert panel for argumentation. More than 20 people, including Deputy Director Luo Mengna of the Vertical Office of the Institute of Science, Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Zheng Shaoyong, Vice Dean of the college of Electronic and Information Engineering (School of Microelectronics college), and members of the project team, attended the meeting.
Deputy Director Luo Mengna delivered a speech on behalf of the project's host institution, emphasizing that the university will strictly implement the management regulations of the National Key Research and Development Program, strengthen the main responsibility, and ensure the high-quality implementation of the project. Vice President Zheng Shaoyong stated that the college will fully provide support for the project's implementation and looks forward to the project team's collaborative innovation to successfully achieve the set goals.
In the argumentation session chaired by Professor Long Shibing, Associate Professor Lu Xing, the project leader, systematically reported on the project plan. Facing the dual challenges of the implementation of the "dual carbon" strategy and the embargo on key materials such as Gallium Oxide, Sun Yat-sen University, in collaboration with Zhejiang University, the 13th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, Xidian University, Shenzhen Information Technology college, and the University of Macau, will focus on breaking through core technologies such as the preparation of Gallium Oxide single crystal substrates, homogeneous epitaxial growth, and device processes. Build a full-chain innovation system of "materials - devices - integration" to promote China's independent and controllable development in the field of ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors.
The expert group listened carefully to the presentation of the project implementation plan. After questioning and full discussion, they believed that the research content of the project was prominent, the technical route was reasonable and feasible, and the implementation plan was operational. The project's organizational management mechanism is sound, the expected results and assessment indicators are clear, and the research and development schedule is reasonably arranged. The expert group unanimously agreed to pass the feasibility study of the project implementation plan and put forward constructive suggestions on the optimization of the technical route and the specific implementation plan. The expert group particularly emphasized that the project team should enhance collaborative efforts and focus on solving key scientific and technical problems.
The successful convening of this meeting marks the official entry of the project into the implementation stage. The project team will further refine the details of the plan based on the expert opinions, refine the task division, and ensure the smooth progress of the research and development work. Meanwhile, the team will also enhance collaboration with relevant units, striving to complete the research and development goals on time and with quality, and contribute to the innovative development of China's third-generation semiconductor technology.
