Recently, Xiong Yizhi, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Lvliang Municipal Committee and Mayor of Lvliang, visited Peking University and Tsinghua University to carry out dedicated discussions on gallium industry development and the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements. He held in-depth exchanges with experts and scholars from relevant schools and departments of both universities to explore potential cooperation pathways.
During the discussions, Xiong Yizhi systematically introduced Lvliang’s industrial foundation and strategic planning for the gallium sector. He noted that Lvliang has identified the gallium industry as a landmark and strategic emerging industry for its transformation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. Against the backdrop of rapid evolution in semiconductor materials, ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors represented by gallium oxide are emerging as critical “gap-fillers” beyond silicon, silicon carbide, and gallium nitride—particularly for higher voltage regimes and extreme operating conditions. They demonstrate irreplaceable application potential in high-voltage power electronics, harsh-environment devices, and solar-blind ultraviolet detection.
From a development perspective, Lvliang possesses several notable advantages. First, it has a solid resource base, with an annual crude gallium output of approximately 160 tons, ensuring stable raw material supply. Second, it benefits from strong capital support, leveraging private capital and transformation development funds to sustain technological R&D and industrialization. Third, it offers robust industrial infrastructure: supported by the municipal high-tech research institute and a well-established alumina industry, Lvliang provides a practical platform for pilot-scale validation and large-scale deployment of gallium oxide-related technologies.
Experts attending the meeting expressed strong confidence in Lvliang’s gallium industry prospects. They suggested further focusing on key materials such as gallium nitride and gallium oxide, while strengthening capabilities in critical segments including metal-organic precursors (MO sources) and substrates. In addition, they recommended forward-looking exploration of emerging application areas such as liquid metals, with the aim of extending the gallium industry chain and enhancing overall competitiveness.
Overall, this engagement not only reflects Lvliang’s forward-looking strategy in next-generation semiconductor materials, but also highlights the growing strategic significance of gallium oxide within advanced power electronics systems. As the industrial ecosystem continues to mature, gallium oxide is expected to become a key enabler driving semiconductor technologies toward higher voltage levels and greater efficiency.
